Dept of English, Assam Univ & Nehru College, Pailapool to organise 2-day workshop on ‘Translating Marginality’

March 13: Department of English, Assam University, Silchar in collaboration with Nehru College, Pailapool is going to organise a 2-day workshop on ‘Translating Marginality: Mapping Migration, Identity and Space in Assam” on 15 & 16 March, 2022. The venue of the workshop is Department of English of Assam University, Silchar.

The inaugural programme will be at 10 AM on 15 March, 2022. The Coordinators of the workshop Prof Dipendu Das, Dept of English of Assam University, Silchar and Prof. Aninda Syam Choudhury, Head, Department of English of the varsity has stated that interested participants may send a mail to translationworkshop.aus@gmail.com. Narrating about the event, Prof. Aninda Syam Choudhury, Head, Department of English of Assam University stated, “In the Indian tradition, the existence of words like `anuvad’, tarjuma’, ‘rupantar’ or ‘bhashantar’ has implied that we have always had a broad vision of any transnational activity wherein our translators have not only attempted at translating the source texts but also taken them as take-off points for freely re-writing and re-situating them. A significant fillip to transnational activities has been given by the recent National Education Policy 2020. which has envisioned a major push for translation from marginal literatures.”

“In this context, any transnational endeavour involving literatures produced in a region like Assam, especially in Southern Assam, which has seen waves of migration from different parts of undivided India and beyond, could be regarded as having interesting possibilities. This two-day workshop has been conceived in order to engage with young scholars involved in translation studies so that they may dwell on these issues and get a hands-on experience of translating poetry written in various languages in Assam,” added Prof. Syam Choudhury
