Dept of Mass Communication of Women’s College organises discussion on mental health of students

March 7: Stress and depression can lead to a variety of serious health problems, including suicide in extreme situations. Being mentally healthy extends one’s life by allowing youths to experience more joy and happiness. Mental health also improves the ability to think clearly and boost self-esteem. Research shows that there is a clear connection between mental health and academic performance. Helping students make the most of their education is everyone’s goal. It is with this objective that a discussion on this germane issue was organised by Women’s College, Silchar.

A discussion on “Importance of Mental Health for Students” was held at the Department of Mass Communication, Women’s College on Monday. To start the proceedings, Principal of the College Dr Manoj Kumar Paul delivered a brief speech on the theme and underscored its importance for the students. Dr Paul, in his speech termed the topic as very relevant, especially in the present situation. He also felicitated the guest speakers with uttorio and saplings.

Guest speakers, expert on the subject, Dr Suman Baidya (neuropsychiatrist) from Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH) and mental health counsellor Ms Paulomi Chakraborty spoke on the multifarious aspects related to mental health and the varied stumbling blocks which are faced by students and shared necessary inputs to overcome the blocks.

Dr Baidya, while addressing the students spoke on the varied ways people suffer from mental agonies and also suggested ways to get rid of them. Paulomi Chakraborty, in her interaction with the students said that much like our physical well-being, mental well-being is crucial too and we must not hesitate to ask questions whenever faced with any issues which disturb peace of mind and productive thinking.

This was followed by an open discussion in which the students asked various questions to the experts, Vice Principal Dr Sutapa Sikidar and other teachers also participated in the event.
