MLA Sherman Ali sent to 14 days judicial custody

Oct. 7: Sherman Ali, suspended MLA of Congress party in Assam has been sent to 14-day judicial custody.

The CJM court on Sunday remanded Congress MLA Sherman Ali to two-day police custody. Though the police sought remand for 10 days, but the court remanded him for two days. During the court proceedings, the lawyer of Sherman Ali citing his ill health requested to send him for medical treatment, but the plea was rejected.

On Saturday evening, Congress MLA of Baghbor constituency in Assam, Sheman Ali was arrested by Panbazar Police from his official residence in Dispur’s MLA Hostel for making ‘controversial comments insulting martyrs’. Multiple FIRs were registered in various police stations demanding MLA Ali’s arrest for his remarks. Sherman Ali while referring to the case of 1983 Assam agitation, had made some derogatory statements calling the martyrs in the case ‘as killers’, further mentioning their involvement in the ‘slaughtering’. As per sources, the charges against him were registered under Section 153/153 (A), 294/500 under IPC.

On Monday morning, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) chief suspended Sherman Ali Ahmed for his controversial comment. The official notice read, “Hon’ble President APCC Sri Bhupen Kumar Borah has suspended Sri Sherman Ali Ahmed MLA, member ACLP from Congress Party with immediate effect for repeatedly violating party discipline.”
