NRC: Hurry up, last date for filing claims is 31 December

December 28: Three more days to go. The deadline for filing claims and objections is 31 December, 2018. The final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam was released on 30 July 2018, with names of 40, 07,707 persons excluded from the list. As per sources, a large number of people left out from the final draft are yet to file their claim.

Many are confused after the Registrar General of India notified on 27 December that the ongoing exercise of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam has got an extension of six months from the Centre and that the entire process of NRC is to be completed by  30 June. This extension is also meant to complete the whole process of NRC. The last date for filing claims and objections, however, remained the same, that is, 31 December, 2018. So if anyone has not filed claims whose names were not there in the final draft of NRC, you really need to hurry. Only three days are left. You should go to your nearest Seva Kendra and submit the claims form.

Deputy Commissioner of Cachar Dr. S. Lakshmanan informed newsmen on 17 December that Cachar alone, the names of 2,28,000 people were excluded from the final draft of NRC published on 30 July. Out of them, only 1,25,000 persons have submitted their claims for inclusion in the NRC. That means 1,03,000 people from Cachar did not filed their claims till 27 December.

At Cachar, many organisations have set up help desks to guide people in filling up the claims form. Barak Upottaka Banga Sahitto o Sanskriti Sammelan is helping the people at Banga Bhavan daily afternoon. Similarly, a NGO from Banipara Silchar, named, ‘Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Seva Sangstha’ has also devoted itself in helping people fill up the claims form. Speaking to way2barak, social activist Kamal Chakraborty said “Many people are approaching us from various parts of the districts to help them fill up the claims form. As most of them are illiterate or semi-literate from rural areas, it becomes difficult for them to fill up the claims form all by themselves. Our team helps them. From the last few days, we are surrounded by people till midnight.”

So, hurry up, if you have not filled up the claims form yet. Remember, the last date for filing claims is 31 December, 2018.
