APCC forms committee to look into liquidator’s notice of vacating quarters by paper mill employees

Sept. 4: The employees of Nagaon Paper Mill and Cachar Paper Mill in Assam have been asked to vacate their accommodation/ quarters within 15 days or will be faced with legal action. This was stated in a notification issued by the liquidator of Hindustan Paper Corporation Ltd, Kuldeep Verma on Friday. Reacting to this, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Kumar Borah has constituted a committee on Saturday to look into the liquidator’s order to the employees of the two defunct paper mills at Nagaon and Panchgram to vacate their quarters.

In an order issued by Bobbeeta Sharma, General Secretary APCC stated, “President Bhupen Kumar Borah has constituted a Hindustan Paper Corporation Employees Redressel Committee (Nagaon & Cachar Paper Mills) under the Chairmanship of Hon’ble MP Sri Pradyut Bordoloi to urgently look into the autocratic Government order to the employees of Nagaon Paper Mills whereby they have been asked to vacate the residential quarters at the earliest. The Committee will also look into various other problems and grievances faced by the employees since the closure of the paper mills.”

The Committee members are as follows –

  • Chairman – Sri Pradyut Bordoloi, MP
  • Vice- Chairman- Sri Kamalakhya Dey Purksyastha, MLA, Working President APCC; Jakir Hussain Sikdar, MLA Working President APCC
  • Members: Ajit Singh, Ex-Minister, Sashikanta Das, MLA, Ramesh Bordoloi, Tamal Kanti Banik
  • Convenor – Arun Tiwari

Cachar Paper Mill and Nagaon Paper Mill run by Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited (HPCL) have been non-functional since 20 October 2015 and 13 March 2017 respectively. The employees of the two mills have not received salaries for the past 56 months.
