SMCH to deal with corona cases only, Civil hospital & private nursing homes to treat other patients

MBBS final year students to be trained to deal with coronavirus related cases

March 26: Arrangements will be made soon at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) to deal specifically with coronavirus-related cases. Various departments of SMCH like dermatology, psychiatry, ophthalmology and ENT would be transformed to Satindra Mohan Dev Civil Hospital, Silchar. Private nursing homes will be engaged for treatment of SMCH’s general patients. This was informed by state Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma while interacting with media during his visit to Silchar on Thursday.

Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma visited Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) on Thursday to take stock of the preparedness in connection with the spread and outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The minister said that MBBS final year students and final year nursing students of the hospital will be trained to deal with coronavirus related cases.

Th eminister reached the hospital around 11:30 AM on Thursday and held a meeting in which the Principal of SMCH, Dr. Babul Bezbaruah, Excise and Fisheries Minister Parimal Suklabaidya, Silchar MP Dr. Rajdeep Roy, Deputy Speaker Aminul Haque Laskar, Silchar MLA Dilip Kumar Paul and Deputy Commissioners of all the three districts of the valley were present. During the one-hour meeting, Himanta discussed the issue of COVID-19 with them thoroughly and sought co-operation of everyone to combat the crisis.

The health minister said medical screening of 27 persons had been done at SMCH so far and all were found negative. Screening of five persons were done on Thursday, the reports of which have still not arrived. Further, Himanta appealed everyone to follow the government order of lockdown across the country in view of the spread of COVID-19. He said that every doctor treating COVID-19 patients should have to take 14 days rest.
