Large-scale rescue operations were launched by the army, Assam Rifles, Manipur Police, and residents. The landslide at the Tupul yard railway construction site, which is close to the Makhuam area, caused the event to happen.

As per reports, the 107th Territorial Army of the Indian Army stationed defence men close to the Tupul Railway Station in the Noney area to guard a railway line that was still being built from Jiribam to Imphal. Among those missing include locals, Territorial Army and staff of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). Many missing people are suspected to be trapped in the debris of the landslide.  However, bad weather has thrown rescue operations in the landslide-hit area out of gear.
