TET-qualified teachers stage protest in Karimganj, MLA Kamalakhya joins them

June 18: Along with the rest of the state, the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET)-qualified teachers of Karimganj on Tuesday staged protest against the statement of Assam education minister Siddhartha Bhattacharjee, who allegedly compared them with ‘drivers’. The protesting teachers sat in protest demonstration near the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Karimganj and later on submitted a memorandum to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal demanding regularisation of their jobs. MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha also joined them in their mass protest.

At Hailakandi too, the TET-qualified teachers, engaged on contractual basis in primary schools joined their 41,000 colleagues across the state who staged protest seeking regularization of their services. The teachers said the BJP-led state government should fulfill its promise made during the last Assembly election to regularise their jobs.

Further, criticising the recent controversial statement of Assam Education Minister, one of the TET qualified teachers at Hailakandi said, “The statement of the education minister is unacceptable. He should understand that we are not ‘drivers’. We are not to sit for TET again as we are already engaged and there is no reason to sit for the examination for the second time.”
