Sitrang effect: All schools to remain closed in Shillong on Tuesday due to heavy rainfall

way2barak, Oct.25: In an order issued by the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner on late Monday, it was stated, “In view of the prevailing weather conditions due to cyclonic storm ‘SITRANG’ and as per IMD weather forecast showing continued intense rainfall in the next 24 hours or so, all schools in East Khasi Hills district are directed to remain closed on October 25.”

Incessant rainfall hit Shillong on Monday and according to an Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) official, rainfall with the same intensity would continue at least until Tuesday evening. The IMD on Tuesday said the remnant of the cyclonic storm “Sitrang” which created a deep depression over Bangladesh has further weakened into a depression over northeast Bangladesh, north-northeast of Agartala and south- southwest of Shillong.

Under the influence of Cyclone Sitrang, a red alert indicating heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy rainfall has been issued for Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura. As a result, many Northeast-bound flights and trains have been cancelled today fearing the threat of cyclone Sitrang.
