Cultural activists take to the streets in support of Tamal Banik

March 19: Art & culture usually remains far away from the political arena. However, on Thursday, Silchar witnessed euphoria on part of a large number of cultural activists in support of Congress candidate Tamal Kanti Banik. Renowned artists in the field of theatre, dance, music took to the streets in open support of Tamal Banik. It needs mention here that, the Congress candidate Tamal Banik is himself an acclaimed dramatist and has been associated with a number of cultural organisations like Nandanik etc.

On Thursday, street plays were organised in two parts of the town in support of Mr. Banik who is contesting the Assembly Election from 09-Silchar constituency. The script of the street play entitled ‘Silchar’ was written and directed by acclaimed dramatist Shekhar Debroy. Senior performers like Biswajit Das, Shekhar Debroy, Ajoy Roy, Arindam Deb, Biswajit Dutta and others performed the street play at Devdoot Point and at Kathal Point.

Apart from them, the other cultural activists who actively participated in the street play were Nikhil Paul, Rahul Dasgupta, Sujit Das (Fulu), Ashish Bhowmick, Subir Bhattacharjee, Rupraj Deb, Kamalesh Bhattacharjee among others. Apart from the street play, songs were also presented in support of Tamal Banik. The cultural activists also interacted with the people.

On Friday, similar cultural activities were carried on in various other parts of Silchar constituency. The places where they performed on Friday are near Bungalow point beneath Kalyani Ashram, Berakhal at Ramnagar near ISBT, Tuku Gram at Ramnagar, Chirukandi point, Athaligram at Chirukandi and Debpara.

The cultural activists also distributed leaflets in support of Tamal Kanti Banik and circulated them among the masses. They appealed to the people to come out in support of Mr. Banik and vote for a positive change. They urged upon the people to make Tamal Banik, a cultural icon of the valley victorious in the ensuing assembly election.
