Kamalakhya meets Meghalaya DGP, urges him to protect the non-tribals

way2barak, Oct.31: In a sorry state of affairs, violence was unleashed on the streets of Shillong in broad daylight on Friday. As per reports, the Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) took out a rally against unemployment from Motphran to Fire brigade. However, soon, the rally over unemployment tuned violent.

It is in this backdrop that protest mounted in many places including Assam upon the atrocities perpetrated upon the non-tribals in Shillong. Congress MLA from North Karimganj in Assam, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha on Monday met the Director General of Police (DGP), Meghalaya and submitted a memorandum wherein he stated, “I beg to draw your kind attention to the various news items and social media reports, regarding attack on innocent non- tribal citizens during a rally on the 29th of October in Shillong. In this regard, I would like to request you kindly to enquire into the matter and be kind enough to initiate necessary remedial measures so that the lives and properties of the bonafide innocent people of Shillong, Meghalaya are protected from such untoward incidents.” He also urged upon the DGP to prohibit the re-occurrence of such incidents in the future.

Later on, MLA Dey Purkayastha said, “I met with the DGP Meghalaya with a request for protection of the life and property of non-Tribal innocent citizens in Meghalaya and enquire the matter related to recent incident & take immediate necessary action against the culprits. He assured me that he will take necessary actions against them.”
