After high voltage poll campaign, silence period begins in 39 constituencies in Assam

March 30: The high voltage poll campaign for the 2nd phase of assembly elections in 39 constituencies of Assam came to an end on Tuesday evening. Polling in this phase will be held on April 1. A total of 345 candidates are in fray in the 2nd phase including 26 women. The second phase of the election  is spread over 13 districts of Assam including the 3 districts in Barak Valley (Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi). As many as 73,44,631 electorates are eligible to vote during this phase.

BJP is contesting in 34 of the 39 seats, while its alliance partners the AGP in six. The Congress is contesting in 28 seats and its allies AIUDF and BPF in seven and four seats respectively. A total of 176 independents are contesting in the second phase. The poll campaign in all the election districts witnessed several star campaigners of all the contesting parties. The most notable feature of election campaign this time was a number of songs recorded and played by the candidates. These were mainly parodies criticising their opponents and eulogizing their own exploits.
