Doctor manhandled by Cachar Police! ADGP tenders unqualified apology

May 23: At a time, when the medical professionals are held in high esteem by all in the country starting from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and even by the common people, an incident of alleged ‘police atrocities’ upon a doctor by Cachar Police has raised many eyebrows. The ‘Covid Warrior’ a term coined by the nation for its care givers during the outbreak of the cronavirus pandemic narrated his ordeal in a tweet which soon became viral in social media. Finally, within 6 hours of the tweet, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Assam, GP Singh sought unqualified apology on behalf of Assam Police.

Dr. Indadul Mazumdar, was doing internship at Tezpur Medical College & Hospital (TMCH). In its fight against Covid-19, they were sent to work in different hospitals of the state. Dr Indadul was posted at Kharupetia. He at once moved to Kharupetia and after joining as a Medical officer under Kharupetia BPHC, he was traveling back to his home in Silchar via road. After reaching Cachar, he was stopped by a team of policemen at Pailapool point. As a precautionary measure, he even collected a permission letter from the Deputy Commissioner for movement during the ongoing Covid curfew.

On Saturday night, Dr Indadul went out. He said, “I was stopped by a team of policemen at Pailapool Chari-Ali. As part of the police enquiry, with all due cooperation, I stated my case and introduced myself as a doctor on duty, who is traveling with a permission letter from the DC office. To this, I was caught by my collar and Pulled out of my car. One of the policemen introduced himself as SDPO and told me what if you’re a doctor, do you know who am I and slapped me. Before I could understand anything from this repose of the police team, a brutal assault had begun with lathis on me and my driver.”
The Covid warrior further alleged that, “I was also taken to Lakhipur police station and was threatened to be detained under a framed charge of obstructing police from their duty. I was made to verbally apologize before I was released from the police station. As I write this, I am extremely traumatized by the incident.”
It is in this backdrop Dr. Indadul Mazumdar felt demoralised and said, “With the physical and mental injuries that I suffered, I am not sure when I will be fit and able to perform my duties as a doctor and contribute to the fight against the COVID pandemic. As I find myself disturbed, weak, and helpless. I am seeking justice with all your help.” On being informed, Nimbalkar Vaibhav Chandrakant, the Superintendent of Police Cachar stated on Sunday afternoon that a proper enquiry of the matter will be done.

However, soon the tweets of Dr. Indadul Mazumdar became viral in social media. His tweets tagging the Chief Minister, DGP, NHM, DC Cachar & some media houses were retweeted by 938 persons. Within 6 hours of his tweet, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Assam, GP Singh in a series of 3 tweets sought unqualified apology. He also wrote that the matter is being enquired and resolved.

ADGP GP Singh tweeted, “Ref unfortunate incident concerning Dr Indadul Mazumdar at Silchar on May 22nd – the matter is being enquired and resolved. On behalf of @assampolice personnel involved, I tender unqualified apology and look forward to working in unison with all frontline workers to save the people of Assam from deadly COVID-19 pandemic. All SsP of @assampolice have been advised and directed to ensure utmost respect to all frontline workers.”
