Nonagenarian pensioner’s last wish to donate ₹5000 to PM-CARES from her pension fulfilled by granddaughter

April 26: A young girl approached Silchar MP, Dr. Rajdeep Roy with an envelope. Many people now meet him every day with donations for PM-CARES Fund or Assam Arogya Nidhi. The girl too was for the same purpose. But taking the envelope in his hand, Rajdeep became emotional. There was a message written on it. “I was dumb struck for a few seconds. It was a donation from a nonagenarian pensioner, who passed away just 4 days ago and her granddaughter was here to fulfill the last wish of her grandmother. Indeed great is our country and its inhabitants,” said Dr Roy.

Biva Dutta, a 94-year-old pensioner breathed her last due to old-age related issues on 22 April at Hailakandi in southern Assam. Her husband Late Bimalendu Kumar Dutta was an employee of Indian railways. After his death, his wife Biva Dutta got the family pension. The nonagenarian lady was also worried about the outbreak of deadly coronavirus in the country. She used to follow the news and came to know about the PM-CARES Fund where people were making donations for the country to fight COVID-19.

Biva Dutta’s granddaughter Ikshita Dutta, a student of TDC at G.C. College, Silchar went to meet her grandmother in Hailakandi just on the eve of the lockdown. It was then that the nonagenarian lady expressed her desire to contribute towards the PM Fund to fight the deadly virus that had then just started to spread in India. The lady gave Rs.5,000 from her monthly pension in cash to her granddaughter and asked her to send the money to the PM Fund.

However, Ikshita was unable to send the money as Prime Minister Modi declared nationwide lockdown from 24 March, 2020. Meanwhile, on 22 April, the nonagenarian Biva Dutta breathed her last due to old age related problem. The money she handed over to Ikshita was still lying with her. On 26 April, Ikshita Dutta managed to go out and meet Silchar MP, Dr. Rajdeep Roy at his residence and handed over the cash of Rs.5,000 to him. It was indeed an emotional moment for even Dr. Roy to know the incident. He acknowledged the donation with immense humility.

Coincidentally, on the same day, Union Minister Shri Pralhad Joshi and Arjun Ram Meghwal held a video conference with the MPs of North-Eastern States on COVID 19. While interacting with them, Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy mentioned the incident to them. He said, “Today a small girl came to my house. Her grandmother passed away 3 days ago at the age of 94. She gave a cash money of Rs.5,000. It was the last wish of the lady before her death to give donation to PM-CARES Fund from her pension account. I really became very emotional today.”

Rajdeep Roy also took to his twitter handle and wrote, “Last wish of #IndianRailways pensioner Mrs Biva Dutta(94yrs) who expired on 22.4.2020 was to contribute 5000/- to #PMCARES from her pension account. Her grand daughter does needful.” He tagged @narendramodi, @JPNadda, @PiyushGoyal, @JoshiPralhad, @arjunrammeghwal, @sarbanandsonwal, @himantabiswa in his tweet.”

Later on speaking to way2barak, Dr. Rajdeep Roy said, “I do not have words to describe the respect I have nourished due to her deeds. Can you imagine the level of patriotism? A nonagenarian pensioner’s last wish to help her motherland at the hour of crisis is perhaps an instance of patriotism at the highest level. I salute the lady and pray that her soul may rest in peace.”
