Silchar slips from 1st to last among cleanest cities in Assam

Nov. 21: The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India organised Swachh  Amrit Mahotsav at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on Saturday. The results for the 6th edition of the world’s largest urban cleanliness survey were announced by President Ram Nath Kovind. The “Swachh Survekshan”, a cleanliness survey conducted by the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs every year.

From Assam, a total of 96 Urban Local Bodies actively participated in the cleanliness survey for sustaining the gains under Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban (SBM – U). Out of 4 cities of Assam in Population 1 lakh to 10 lakh category, Silchar was placed at the 4th position (last position). It needs mention here that Silchar achieved the rare distinction of cleanest city in the state last year in this category. However Silchar’s national ranking has improved compared to SS 2020.

SS 2021 Assam Cities ranked as follows–
  • Dibrugarh, National rank 311
  • Guwahati National rank 312
  • Nagaon National rank 334
  • Silchar National rank 346

The nine towns of Assam that have secured a rank in the North East Zone Category in the Swachh Survekshan-2021 are:

  • Tezpur: Cleanest City, 50K – 1 Lakh Population
  • Jorhat: Best Self-Sustainable City, 50K – 1 Lakh Population
  • Bongaigaon: Best City in Innovation & Best Practices, 50K – 1 Lakh Population
  • Tinsukia: Fastest Mover City, 50K – 1 Lakh Population
  • Kokrajhar: Best Self-Sustainable City, 25K – 50K Population
  • Golaghat: Cleanest City, 25k – 50K Population
  • Haflong: Fastest Mover City, 25K – 50K Population
  • Hailakandi: Best City in Innovation & Best Practices, 25K – 50K Population
  • Lakhipur (Cachar): Best Self-Sustainable City, Below 25K Population

The “Swachh Survekshan”, a cleanliness survey conducted by the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs every year, ranks cities/ towns on cleanliness parameters. A total of 4320 cities, 62 cantonment boards, and 97 Ganga towns were surveyed under the programme with participation from 4.2 crore citizens.
