Special session on women-centric laws held in Lakhipur

way2barak, February 21 – In a significant step towards strengthening legal awareness and empowerment for women, an insightful session on Women-Centric Legislations & Women-Centric Provisions in Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) was held at Sribar GP Office, Lakhipur Block. The event was organized as part of the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme, reinforcing the government’s commitment to gender justice and women’s rights.
The awareness session was a collaborative initiative led by SANKALP: District Hub for Empowerment of Women, Department of Women & Child Development, Cachar, in association with the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Cachar, and Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission (ASRLMS), Cachar. The program was actively participated by the members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and Gender Point Persons, marking a collective effort to educate women about their legal rights and avenues for justice.
Salma Sultana, Secretary of DLSA, Cachar, took center stage in the discussion, elaborating on crucial legal provisions under BNS that are designed to safeguard women’s rights. She emphasized the importance of legal literacy in ensuring justice and equality, highlighting the legislative measures aimed at protecting women from violence and discrimination.
Adding to the discourse, Rupali Akura, Centre Administrator of One Stop Center, Cachar, shed light on the comprehensive services available under Mission Shakti, a government initiative dedicated to supporting women in distress.
The session also witnessed the participation of key officials from Assam Rural Livelihoods Mission (ARLMS), including Sherlybom Rongpipi, Block Program Manager, and Mohan Deb, Block Coordinator, both representing Lakhipur. Their presence underscored the collaborative approach needed to bridge the gap between legal knowledge and women’s empowerment at the grassroots level.
Throughout the program, speakers reiterated the importance of legal awareness as a fundamental tool for empowerment. The session not only educated participants on the legal framework designed for their protection but also encouraged them to seek justice and utilize available support systems. With a focus on access to justice, gender equality, and community participation, the event stood as a testament to the ongoing efforts in building a more informed and empowered society for women.
