Violence against Bengali Hindu population in Meghalaya: MLA Silchar seeks intervention of CM Assam

way2barak, Nov.4: The incident of physically assault of the non-tribals in Shillong recently by the members of he Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People ( FKJGP) has invited the wrath of people from different walks of life.

On Friday evening, MLA Silchar Dipayan Chakraborty submitted a letter of concern to the Chief Minister of Assam Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding the recent incidents of violence against Bengali Hindu population in Meghalaya. In the letter, MLA Chakraborty sought the intervention of CM Assam so that the Bengali Hindus are no more targeted in Meghalaya.

Later on, MLA Chakraborty informed, “I was really humbled to get a positive response from the Chief Minister with the assurance that the matter will be taken into account seriously and the Chief Minister of Meghalaya will be requested to intervene seriously so that our people do not suffer for long. I request everyone to have trust in our Chief Minister who is also the Convenor of NEDA.”

As per reports, the Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) took out a rally against unemployment from Motphran to Fire brigade. However, soon, the rally over unemployment tuned violent. Those who took out the rally were seen in some videos (viral in social media) punched and kicked passers by and those caught in the traffic jam. Some of them in the rally also covered their face with mask while physically assaulting the passers-by. The terror was learnt to have escalated near the  Dhankheti junction. In the viral videos, shopkeepers were seen to down their shutters and run for life. People on foot and also those on two-wheelers and cars were running to save themselves from the FKJGP.
