Strange yet true! Clas XII exams held under vehicle headlights in Bihar

Feb. 2: Though strange, yet one such incident reported from Bihar is probably the only one of its king in the world. On the first day one of the examination of class 12 (Intermediate) in Bihar, mismanagement was reported from one of the centres of East Champaran`s Motihari town on Tuesday evening when students were forced to write papers of Hindi in the lights of vehicles. The incident took place in Maharaja Harendra Kishore Singh college where over 400 students were made to write Hindi papers in the second sitting examination under the lights of vehicles.

The examination for the second sitting was scheduled at 1.45 pm to 5 pm on Tuesday. Students alleged that they did not get their answer sheets until 4.30 pm. The exam went on till 8 pm. As the seating arrangement of students was not made properly in advance, the examination was delayed till 4 pm. The students and their parents got angry and they shouted slogans against the college and district administration.

As there was no electricity supply in the college, the administration arranged a generator but it did not cater to the whole area. Finally, parents who came on their four wheelers switched on the headlights of their vehicles to complete the examination. Students then were made to sit on the corridor outside and write the exam as car headlights flashed light on them.

Sanjay Kumar, the East Champaran district education officer said, “We are looking into the matter, how and under what circumstances the examination started late at the said centre.” A district official said the examination was reported to have been delayed due to what he called “improper seating arrangements” leading to protests by parents of the students, prompting the district administration to step in. Senior police officers arrived with a large number of policemen to tackle the situation. An inquiry into what went wrong has been ordered.
