Unique programme held in GC College to commemorate the 75th anniversary of India’s Freedom Movement

March 13: To commemorate the 75th anniversary of India’s Freedom Movement, a detailed programme entitled ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ was chalked out by the Ministry of Education, Cultural Affairs and Information, Government of Assam. In this connection, DHE Assam directed all provincialised colleges to organise seminars/ symposiums/ special talks etc. to instill among the students a sense of patriotism.

As such, on Saturday, G.C. College, Silchar organised a special talk on the impact of Gandhi on the Indian society. Dr. Amalendu Bhattacharjee and Dr. Moinul Haque were the speakers. Dr. Amalendu Bhattacharjee threw light on the contribution of Barak Valley on India’s Freedom Movement. He talked about some forgotten folk songs that were composed during those days. SNoted cultural activist, Shekhar Deb Roy sang several folk songs wherein the role of Gandhi among the village folks was duly highlighted. His mesmerising voice added wings to the presentation. In his speech, Dr. Moinul Haque, Head, Department of History, GC College, Silchar gave a detailed picture of different aspects of Freedom Movement of India.

“The folksong (Dhamail of Barak Valley region) is indeed the reflection of the fact that there was a great effect of Gandhi and the ongoing national freedom struggle on Surma- Barak Valley and its folklore. It also reflects the fact that this region also contributed a lot in the national freedom movement,” added Mr. Deb Roy.

It needs mention here that two of the luminaries of the freedom movement was directly connected with G.C. College. The first Principal of the College was Arun kumar Chanda while the first GB President of this institution was Kamini Kumar Chanda. On Friday, the programme was organised at the conference hall of the GC College and was attended by the teacers and the students.
