Congress, AIUDF stages walkout in Assam Assembly

November 28: The first day of the winter session of the Assam Legislative Assembly on Thursday witnessed a ruckus as the opposition parties Congress and AIUDF staging protest and subsequent walkout against NRC and CAB. Both these two parties demanded the Speaker Hintendra Nath Goswami to cancel the question hour to discuss on Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and National Register of Citizens. However, as the Speaker refused to do as per their demand, so the MLA’s of Congress and AIUDF staged a walkout shouting slogans and displaying placards.

Later on, addressing newsmen, Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma sad that the present NRC is full of errors and on 5 December, he will present a CAG report consisting of all the facts. The team has inspected the NRC offices which consists of anomalies executed under the supervision of Prateek Hajela,

Taking a dig at the opposition, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the indigenous people of Assam are not satisfied with the NRC but political party leaders from AIUDF and Congress are satisfied with the list. He further informed that Assam is also going to be a part of the national NRC, which will be prepared after the CAB. He said union home minister Amit Shah is likely to meet the Chief Ministers of the eight northeastern states, opposition leaders and other organizations on November 29 and 30 to discuss the issue of CAB threadbare.

Sarma said, “The whole country is going to have an NRC and Assam will be a part of it. The new pan India NRC will be done with one cut off date for the entire country to ensure that those excluded in Assam cannot enrol as citizens in other states and vice versa.”
