TDC Commerce merit list of GC College closes at 88%, ABVP demands to increase seats
Sept. 6: The high pass percentage in HSLC and HS Examinations conducted by SEBA and AHSEC in 2021 has given rise to crisis of seats for aspirants to Class XI and TDC 1st semester in various educational institutions across the state. As for instance, at GC College, Silchar, the cut-off for admission in TDC Commerce was fixed at 70 percent. However, after the merit list was published, it was found that many meritorious students failed to avail seats for themselves. The merit list for TDC Commerce Honours course closed at 88 percent, whereas that of TDC Pass Commerce closed at 85 percent. This has led to a huge hue and cry among the student community.
On Monday, large number of students gathered in the campus of GC College along with their parents and guardians. Meanwhile, GC College Unit of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) met the Principal of the college on Monday and gave him a memorandum, wherein they raised a series of demands in connection with admission policy.
In the memorandum, ABVP stated that many bright students too were left out from the merit list published by GC College recently. As such, they demanded that the college should increase the number of seats so that more students could be accommodated. Demand was also made to introduce to add another shift along with the morning and day shift to accommodate the left out students. “As the Education Minister of Assam has asked the institutes to increase the number of shifts, we request you to introduce a new evening shift in all streams to accommodate maximum number of students,” wrote ABVP in the memorandum.
“Students be allowed to undergo online counselling during the admission process, so that they could be able to change their subjects, if required,” stated ABVP in their memorandum. They also appealed to reduce the cut-off marks or “allow to apply under any quota for getting admission.” ABVP further pointed out that there were “many faults in the merit list released for admission in the Science stream” and hence demanded to rectify the same at the earliest so that “deserving candidates are not deprived admission.”
Present during the submission of the memorandum were Kisholoy Chakraborty, Rohit Chanda, Kajal Sekhar, Snehal Chakraborty, Bishal Nath, Snehangshu Shekhar Bhattacharjee, Karanjit Deb of ABVP among others.
