Students Union airs grievance on TDC exam notification issued by Assam University
May 20: Amidst the ongoing nationwide lockdown augmented by the outbreak of coronavirus, Assam University, Silchar has come up with a new academic calendar for Under Graduate (UG) (CBCS & Non-CBCS in Affiliated Colleges) on 12 May, 2020. As per the notification, TDC Non-CBCS Even Semester Examinations will begin from 7 July, 2020 and will continue till 25 July, 2020. The examination for TDC CBCS 2nd & 4th semester will be held from 27 July to 12 August. This notification has led to great resentment among the student community.
In this connection, Assam University Students Union (AUSU) and Barak Valley TDC Students Union has submitted memorandums to the Vice Chancellor of the varsity wherein they have put forward certain demands as regards conduct of even semester examinations and submission of forms. Sharing this information, Biswarup Bhattacharjee, President of Assam University Students Union (AUSU) commented that they have already intimated their point of view to the university authorities and were hopeful that their submission will be accepted. The points raised by the students union in their memorandum addressed to the Vice Chancellor are:
- As the examination is scheduled to be held in July and a negligible percentage of syllabus is covered till now in maximum departments as online classes are not up to the mark, so we demand proper imparting of lessons before finalising the exam schedule. As such, they demanded one month of classroom teaching before commencement of the exams.
- Many students who are resident of some neighbouring states like Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram etc have already left for their home. As per protocol, if and when they come to Assam, they will be sent for institutional quarantine. It is in this context, that the student union mentioned that if the examinations be held in July, then what will be the steps taken by the authority to quarantine the students coming from different states for semester exam, otherwise it will be a great health hazard for the students.
- As regards practical exams, the students wrote that in various departments practical classes were not yet started, so they requested the authority to take necessary steps as regards conducting practical classes before commencement of final examinations.
Moreover, students have also pointed out certain confusions prevailing among them as regards the date of submission of forms notified by Assam University. Speaking to our correspondent, they said that it is very difficult for all the final semester students to complete the submission of examination forms by 31 May as many students are still unaware about it and some of them are even stuck outside the state.
