Stop dumping garbage on drains & encroachment; help us to keep Silchar clean, appeals DC & MLA

We will be compelled to shut markets if vendors dump garbage in drains: DC Jalli

April 24: The big drains flowing through the heart of Silchar town has become chocked due to encroachment, illegal constructions and dumping of garbage. Such a scene could also be discerned at Ranghirkhal and Singirkhal. All such activities results in choking of these drains, which ultimately leads to artificial flood during the rainy season. This was opined by Deputy Commissioner, Cachar, Keerthi Jalli and MLA Silchar Dipayan Chakraborty.

On Sunday, the Deputy Commissioner, MLA Silchar, BJP District President Bimalendu Roy along with other departmental officers went around the town and and took stock of the big drains. They also themselves tried to clean the drains getting over a boat at Ranghirkhal. Expressing her views, DC Jalli said, “The Rangirkhal has been choked due to dumping of garbage and illegal construction for a considerable period of time. We will take in hand the task of cleaning these drains so that during the raining season the town is not inundated by artificial flood.”

“However, I would like to reiterate that until and unless people become conscious and stop throwing garbage in the drains, these cleaning exercises will be futile. It is for the people to decide whether they want to save their own town or not. Further, as you know that the government is exhibiting zero tolerance towards illegal encroachments. Whether it is a 3-storied building or a shed, we would certainly launch eviction drive and clear all encroachments. Even the public representatives have lend their support in this regard. Moreover, the local markets set up near the drains are also dumping their garbage in the drains.  As such, I again appeal to the people to stop dumping garbage in the drains. Please help us to help you,” added the Deputy Commissioner.

DC Keerthi Jalli also warned all vegetable vendors at various parts of the town like National Highway, Rangirkhari etc to immediately stop dumping garbage in the drains. She directed them to hand over the garbage to Municipal garbage disposal vehicles for proper disposal. “If such type of activities by the vendors continues, then we will be compelled to shut down these markets,” stated DC Jalli.

Expressing his views, Silchar MLA, Dipayan Chakraborty said, “You have elected me as the MLA of this town. It’s my responsibility to provide you a better civic life and for this I solicit your cooperation. The present Himanta Biswa Sarma-led BJP government has taken in hand multiple welfare schemes. But only the government initiative is not enough until and unless people come forward and lend their hand of cooperation. I can fulfill your dreams only when you all cooperate with us in keeping the drains garbage-free.” He also appealed to the people at large not to encroach upon the drains while constructing building or markets. It’s the people who ultimately shall have to help in making this town beautiful.

During the day, the work of cleaning the drains have began in full swing. The Deputy Commissioner and the MLA personally supervised the cleaning of the drains.
