State University: GC College in full celebration mood on Wednesday
way2barak, Nov.30: Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma after the Cabinet Meeting on 29 November declared that GC College will be upgraded to state University. The announcement led to bursting of fire crackers by the students in the campus yesterday. Teachers too were in celebration mood.
However, a day later, on Wednesday, it was a grand gathering of the students in the GC College campus. With loud music students were seen to dance and celebrate this great feat. At a time, the celebration assumed ‘festival of colours.’ The prestigious educational institution has indeed got reasons to celebrate.
One of the students said, “I am indeed very happy to note that our college has now acquired the status of a university. At present, I am in TDC 3rd semester and now I hope to complete my post- graduation also from here. My parents were also students of this prestigious institution. I would like to thank our Chief Minister for this big announcement.”
Gurucharan College, established on 15th July, 1935 is recognised as one of the premier institutions in the field of Collegiate education. It has carved out a distinct identity of its own in the field of higher education in the eastern part of India.
The well-acclaimed reputation of the college stands not on its vast area of land, buildings constructed on it or on its enrolment strength but on its enriched academic & intellectual legacy built up during the time-span of 87 years of its life at the cost of effort and sacrifices of a batch of dedicated personalities who left no stone unturned to erect this huge edifice of higher education in this Barak Valley. Gurucharan College, popularly known as GC College, is a college imparting 10+2, undergraduate, certifications and postgraduate education under the aegis of Assam Higher Secondary Education Council, Guwahati and Assam University, Silchar. Gurucharan College, Silchar is at present affiliated under Assam University.
