Stagnant water at Bilpar emitting foul smell jeopardizing civilised existence

June 26: The last week has proved disastrous for Silchar. When torrential rainfall for a few days resulted in accumulation of water in various parts of the town, the sufferings of the people increased manifold with the river crossing the danger level and entry of water through the already broken embankment at Bethukandi since last Monday. Since then, Silchar has been submerged. However, in certain areas like Bilpar (Padma Beel) the accumulated water has turned black jeopardizing civilised existence.

This area Bilpar (Padma Beel) starting from Radhamadhab Road point (near Ishan Marriage Hall), Ice Cream Factory Lane (Besides Art Cottage), Padma Beel has seen the worst phase. The level of water in this part of Silchar town went to such a height that the 1st floor of most of the houses at Padma Beel was submerged. However, since last two days, the accumulated water has become stagnant. The colour of the water there is now deep black with sour smell.

It needs mention here that the people residing at this part of the town under Silchar Municipal Board (SMB) has become vulnerable to multiple diseases. “The need of the hour now is to immediately pump out the water by the authorities and help us in our struggle for existence. We are unable to breath properly. Please help us as soon as possible,” said a local resident, who owns a grocery shop at Fatak Bazar.

The receding flood waters brought to fore stinking garbage like rotten vegetable, grains on the roads, household wastes etc. At present, when other parts of Silchar town is still reeling under flood water, people of Bilpar are struck amidst the dirty, foul smelling stagnant water.
