SoP issued by Assam govt specifying conditions for regulating entry of Imams in the state

Aug. 22: After the Goalpara district police on Saturday arrested two persons, both imams of mosques, for links with the jihadi group Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent, Assam Chief Minister on Monday came up with a standard operating procedures (SoP), which would regulate the entry of the Imams in the state. He said that help is being taken from the Muslim community in Assam to implement the SoPs.

Informing about this, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said “Imams and other people coming to madrassas from outside state” have to register their names on a portal. Sarma asked people to notify the police, who would conduct verification if an unknown Imam came to a village. Sarma earlier said tech-savvy foreign terrorists were threatening to turn Assam into an ‘Islamist hub’. He He further added that those who belong to Assam do not need to register their names on the portal.
