Sonai & Lakhipur Municipal Boards all set to go for the polls on Sunday
March 5: State Election Commission has announced the schedule for elections to 80 Municipal Boards of Assam. Elections will be held on 6 March, 2022 and results will be declared on 9 March, 2022. Assam State Election Commissioner Alok Kumar stated that it is for the first time in the history of Assam that M2 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be used during the Municipal elections. In Cachar district, elections will be held for the Sonai and Lakhipur Municipal Boards along with the rest of the districts on 6 March.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, polling teams were dispatched to Sonai and Lakhipur of Cachar for municipal election to be held on 6 March. The administration and police have made elaborate arrangements for the polling day. Polling will begin from 8 am. DC Cachar, Keerthi Jalli has stated that adequate security measures have been ensured and so all should go and exercise their franchise on Sunday.
Poll materials for election to Sonai Municipal Board were distributed from Govt Boys HS School, Silchar and for Lakhipur Municipal Board, the polling teams were dispatched from Earl High School, Lakhipur on Saturday. The polling teams have already reached their respective booths on Saturday itself.
It needs mention here that a total of 14,580 electors will exercise their franchise in the Sonai Municipal Board election, out of which, 7,335 are male and 7,245 are female. There are10 wards in Sonai Municipal Board in which a total of 33 candidates will be contesting. The polling on Sunday will take place at 15 polling booths. 52 poll personnel were drafted for these 15 booths.
Again, for election to Lakhipur Municipal Board, a total of 9,791 voters will exercise their franchise, out of which, 4,885 are male and 4,906 are female. 12 among them are specially- abled voters. There are 10 wards under the jurisdiction of Lakhipur Municipal Board in which a total of 28 candidates will be contesting. The polling on Sunday will take place at 12 polling booths. 48 poll personnel were drafted for these 12 booths.
Meanwhile, campaigning for 977 wards of 80 municipal bodies in Assam came to an end. Dry Day has been declared in the Municipal areas where the polling will be conducted on 6 March.
