SLRM project of turning ‘garbage to gold’ by Cachar District Administration yield fruits
August 23: Within a month of the launching of a Swachh Sundor Silchar pilot project for Solid Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) centre, it has started yielding fruits. The ‘garbage to gold’ project launched at Silchar on 13 July, 2019 has become a success.
The pilot project yields result as the project workers sell egg shell powder, made from waste egg shell, among the Legislators of Cachar on last Wednesday during a meeting held at the Conference Hall of the Deputy commissioner, Cachar. MP from Silchar, Dr Rajdeep Roy, legislators Dilip Kumar Paul, Mihir Kanti Shome, Kishore Nath, Amar Chand Jain and Rajdeep Gowala, purchased the egg shell powder.
The egg shell powder was prepared by Swacch Sundor Silchar women federation members, formed out of the volunteers working for SLRM. This egg shell powder is very rich in calcium that can be used as fertiliser for the plants. It also helps reduce the pH level of soil and enhances the soil productivity.
In an innovative step by district administration, to promote use of cloth bags in place of plastic bags and provide alternate livelihood to unemployed, cloth bags made by SHG women were gifted away to all the dignitaries who attended Bhumi Pujan for mini secretariat at Srikona.
Expressing delight at the success of the pilot project, DC Cachar Laya Madduri said, “Change should begin at home. From now onward, we will be replacing bouquet and sweets with cotton bags as gifts and jute files and folders made by SHG instead of plastic folders.” She also apprised that they were getting immense response from people of Silchar in their endeavor to reduce single-use plastic. Indeed, MP Silchar Dr. Rajdeep Roy to expressed happiness at this step launched to save the environment.
