Silchar- Kumbhirgram road inundated, traffic movement halts

May 18: The water level of river Barak at Annapurna Ghat and other places are rising alarmingly. In a WT message to the Secretary to the Government of Assam, Water Resource Department, the Executive Engineer of Silchar WR Division on 18 May informed that the dyke system of River Barak at multiple places have over-topped.

The Silchar – Kumbhirgram road was also inundated. As a result, from Wednesday morning, vehicular traffic ceased to move on that road. Water lever over there was gradually increasing.

As per report received from Assam Water Resource Department, river Barak at Annapurna Ghat, Silchar at 12 noon on Wednesday was flowing much above the danger level and was recorded at 21.42 metres. The danger level at this point is 19.83 metre. The water level was was rising by 4 cm per hour. This is the highest level of water (21.42 mt) at Annapurna Ghat recorded this year. The highest flood level at this point was recorded at 21.763 on 11 September, 2007.
