Assam Academy of Mathematics celebrates International Mathematics Day at NIT Silchar

March 15: The Cachar District Branch of Assam Academy of Mathematics (AAM) in collaboration with Department of Mathematics, NIT Silchar celebrated the International Day of Mathematics on 14 March 2020 at NIT Silchar. The event was attended by mathematics enthusiasts from various educational institutions of Silchar.

A number of interesting activities involving simple mathematical concepts was demonstrated by Dr. Debashish Sharma, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, Gurucharan College, Silchar. An interactive quiz session was also conducted by Dr. Sharma to illustrate the relevance of the theme ‘Mathematics is everywhere”.

Earlier during the day, the inaugural session was presided over by Prof. Sivaji Bandyopadhyay, Director, NIT Silchar in presence of Dr. Mausumi Sen, Head of the Department of Mathematics, NIT Silchar, Dr. Eeshankur Saikia, Professor of Physical Science Division, GUIST and other faculty members of NIT Silchar. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Bandyopadhyay highlighted the importance of mathematics in engineering disciplines and encouraged the students to pursue career in mathematics.

In his speech, Dr. Saikia presented the role of mathematics as an indispensable tool for physical sciences. Dr. Mausumi Sen also spoke about the relevance of mathematics in almost all subjects of study and in everyday life. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Debashish Sharma, General Secretary of AAM Cachar District, said that the International Day of Mathematics is a worldwide celebration led by the International Mathematical Union to popularize mathematics among the general public.

UNESCO has chosen 14 March for IDM because in MM-DD format, March 14 is written as 3/14, which represents the first three significant digits of the famous mathematical constant Pi (3.14159…). As a kind gesture, a memento was presented by AAM Cachar District to Department of Mathematics, NIT Silchar. The members of AAM Cachar District were felicitated by the members of Department of Mathematics, NIT Silchar. At the end of the program, Dr. Praveen Kumar Gupta, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, NIT Silchar delivered the vote of thanks and congratulated everyone for the successful celebration of the mathematical event.
