Return to normal: Curfew lifted in areas under Malugram Police Outpost
August 7: Following no fresh reports of any untoward incident, the Cachar district administration lifted curfew in areas falling under Malugram Police Outpost of Silchar town from 6 am on Friday. Extensive mobile announcement has been done from DDIPR office today in the areas under Malugram police station informing the residents of this decision.
In an order issued to this effect on Friday, District Magistrate, Keerthi Jalli said the curfew has been withdrawn from areas under Malugram Police Outpost of Silchar town ‘in view of return to normalcy and as no untoward incident has been reported during the relaxation of curfew from 12 noon to 5 pm on Thursday’. The administration had to impose curfew in Ghoniwala and adjoining areas under Malugram Police Outpost on Monday following pelting of stones between two groups on Sunday late evening.
In view of the incident that took place ahead of the bhoomi pujan of Ram Temple in Ayodhya, the district administration convened a meeting on Monday in which various segments of society and representatives of political parties cutting across party lines underscored the need to augment the efforts of the district administration in restoring peace, and maintaining law and order and communal harmony in the town. The meeting resolved to enhance administration-public coordination, quell rumour-mongering and reactivate peace committees for ushering in durable peace and tranquility in society amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Terming the incident of pelting of stones as handiwork of miscreants out to disturb peace in the society, the participants demanded stern action against the perpetrators who triggered the trouble. The participants thanked the civil and police administrations for taking swift action and preventing the incident from snowballing into a major law and order problem.
