Prof. Parthankar invited to Meghna Knowledge Forum in Thailand
থাইল্যান্ডে আয়োজিত মেঘনা নলেজ ফোরামে আমন্ত্ৰিত অধ্যাপক পাৰ্থঙ্কর

ওয়ে টু বরাক, ২৫ জুলাই : থাইল্যান্ডের ব্যাংককে এশিয়ান ইনস্টিটিউট অব টেকনোলজিতে আয়োজিত দ্বিতীয় মেঘনা নলেজ ফোরামে আমন্ত্ৰিত সদস্য হিসেবে অংশ নিলেন আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের স্কুল অব এনভায়রনমেন্টাল সায়েন্সেসের ডিন তথা বরিষ্ঠ অধ্যাপক পাৰ্থঙ্কর চৌধুরী৷ এশিয়ার ‘ইন্টারন্যাশনাল ইউনিয়ন ফর কনজারভেশন অব ন্যাচার’-এর উদ্যোগে আয়োজিত তিনদিনের এই সম্মেলন শুরু হয় গত বুধবার৷ এই সম্মেলনে যোগ দিয়ে ‘সামাজিক চ্যালেঞ্জ মোকাবেলায় বাস্তুতন্ত্ৰ এবং জীববৈচিত্ৰ্য সুরক্ষা’ শীৰ্ষক বিষয়ে বক্তব্য পেশ করেন অধ্যাপক চৌধুরী৷

সম্মেলনে থাইল্যান্ড ছাড়াও বাংলাদেশ, নেপাল, ভিয়েতনাম, ভারত, নিউজিল্যান্ড সহ বিভিন্ন দেশের বিপুল সংখ্যক প্ৰতিনিধি অংশ নেন৷ এতে মেঘনা অববাহিকার সমগ্ৰ পরিসরে প্ৰকৃতি ভিত্তিক সমাধান, রক্ষণাবেক্ষণ এবং বাস্তবায়নের জন্য আগামী দিনের কৰ্মপন্থা নিয়ে বিস্তৃত আলোচনা হয়৷

প্ৰসঙ্গত, ইন্টারন্যাশনাল ইউনিয়ন ফর কনজারভেশন অব ন্যাচার (আইইউসিএন) রাষ্ট্ৰসংঘের সাধারণ পরিষদে পৰ্যবেক্ষকের মৰ্যাদাপ্ৰাপ্ত একটি পরিবেশ বিষয়ক সংস্থা৷ ১৯৬৯ সাল থেকেই ভারত এর সদস্য৷ প্ৰতিটি কর্মসূচিতেই ভারতের পরিবেশ, বন ও জলবায়ূ পরিবৰ্তন মন্ত্ৰক প্ৰতিনিধিত্ব করে আসছে৷ ২০১৮ সাল থেকে আইইউসিএন মেঘনা নদীর অববাহিকার বাস্তুতন্ত্ৰ-ভিত্তিক সংরক্ষণকে উৎসাহিত করার জন্য ‘বিল্ডিং রিভার ডায়ালগ অ্যান্ড গভৰ্নেন্স প্ৰোগ্ৰাম’-এর অধীনে আলোচনা ও গবেষণার সুযোগ করে দিচ্ছে৷ এই অববাহিকাটি এশিয়ার সবচেয়ে জৈব-বৈচিত্ৰ্যপূৰ্ণ এবং সাংস্কৃতিকভাবে সমৃদ্ধ অববাহিকাগুলির মধ্যে অন্যতম৷ বাংলাদেশ ও ভারতের ৫ কোটিরও বেশি মানুষ অববাহিকা দ্বারা প্ৰদত্ত বাস্তুতন্ত্ৰ পরিষেবার ওপর নিৰ্ভর করে, যার মধ্যে জলাভূমিতে বসবাসকারী আদিবাসী সম্প্ৰদায়ও রয়েছে৷

সম্প্ৰতি আইইউসিএন আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ইকোলজি অ্যান্ড এনভায়রনমেন্টাল সায়েন্সেস বিভাগের সঙ্গে বরাক উপত্যকার কাছাড় ও শ্ৰীভূমি জেলার মেঘনা বেসিন অৰ্থাৎ বরাক নদীর দু’পাশে বসবাসকারী লোকদের জীবন, জীবিকা ও বাস্তুতন্ত্ৰের রক্ষণাবেক্ষণের জন্য কাজ করতে উদ্যোগী হয়েছে৷

way2barak, July 25 : Professor Parthankar Choudhury, Dean of the School of Environmental Sciences of Assam University, participated as an invited member in the second Meghna Knowledge Forum at Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok. The three-day conference organized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) commenced on Wednesday. Professor Choudhury attended the conference and delivered a speech on the topic of ‘Ecosystem and biodiversity protection for addressing societal changes’.

A large number of representatives from various countries including Bangladesh, Nepal, Vietnam, India, New Zealand etc participated in the conference. The event ended with futuristic commitment on preserving, maintaining and implementing nature based solutions along the entire range of meghna basin.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is an environmental organization with an observer status in the UN General Assembly. IUCN is honored to count the Govt of India as one of its members since 1969, represented by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

Since 2018, IUCN has been facilitating multi-stakeholder dialogues and research under the Building River Dialogue and Governance Programme (BRIDGE) to promote ecosystem-based conservation of the Meghna River Basin. The Basin is one of the most bio-diverse and culturally rich basins in Asia. More than 50 million people in Bangladesh and India depend on the ecosystem services provided by the basin, including indigenous communities living in the catchment areas.

Recently, IUCN has initiated a collaboration with the Department of Ecology and Environmental Sciences, Assam University, to work on the conservation of the lives, livelihoods and ecosystems of people living on both sides of the Barak River, i.e. the Meghna Basin, in the Cachar and Sribhumi districts of the Barak Valley.
