President, Prime Minister & other leaders mourn the demise of Tarun Gogoi

Nov. 23: Former Assam Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader Tarun Gogoi breathed his last at 5.34 PM on Monday in Gauhati medical College & Hospital (GMCH). He was 86. The three-time CM has been on life-support during the past two days following multi-organ failure on 21 November. His death was mourned by the Indian President, Prime Minister, Governor of Assam, Chief Minister of Assam, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and others.

President Ramnath Kovind said in his condolence message wrote, “Extremely sad to know of the demise of Shri Tarun Gogoi, former Chief Minister of Assam. The country has lost a veteran leader with rich political and administrative experience. His long tenure in office was a period of epochal change in Assam.” He further wrote, “He will always be remembered for the development of Assam and especially towards his efforts to improve law and order and fighting insurgency in the state. His passing away marks the end of an era. In this hour of grief, condolences to his family, friends and supporters.”

Expressing utmost grief, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Shri Tarun Gogoi Ji was a popular leader and a veteran administrator, who had years of political experience in Assam as well as the Centre. Anguished by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this hour of sadness. Om Shanti.”

“Shri Tarun Gogoi was a true Congress leader. He devoted his life to bringing all the people and communities of Assam together. For me, he was a great and wise teacher. I loved and respected him deeply. I will miss him. My love and condolences to Gaurav & the family,” tweeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi tweeted: “I am deeply hurt by the death of veteran politician and former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi who served the state as the Chief Minister for three consecutive terms with deep commitment.”

Union DoNER Minister Dr Jitendra Singh in his tweet wrote,  “Extremely saddened by demise of veteran leader & former CM Assam Sh #TarunGogoi. I had privilege of sharing a very pleasant relationship with him. In matters of Northeast, his advice was always solicited. My sincere condolences to his family, particularly his son @GauravGogoiAsm.”

Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “The loss of Shri Tarun Gogoi is huge & his absence will mean a vacuum in Assam’s politics that shall be difficult to fill. I offer my condolences to the bereaved family & pray to God to give his soul eternal peace. Om Shanti.” In another tweet, he wrote, “A man of grand vision & extraordinary passion, Sri Tarun Gogoi was an intensely people’s man, focused on progress & enjoyed support of all . I was lucky to have worked under him. He rescued Assam from a period of darkness & led it for 15 yrs ensuring a new phase of development.”

Announcing the news of Gogoi’s demise, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that his body will be taken first to his official residence and from there, his body will then be kept at Srimanta Sankardev Kalashetra for the people to pay their last tribute to their beloved leader. His last rites will be performed with full state honour.
