Police assaults ACS officer in Guwahati, statewide protest launched by ACS & ALRS association
March 10: What seems to be very unusual is that an ACS Officer Bibhas Medhi was physically assaulted by Assam Police in Guwahati. This had an immediate repercussion among the state bureaucracy. On Thursday, a symbolic protest was staged throughout the state by the Assam Civil Service (ACS) Association and Assam Land Revenue Service (ALRS) Association.
At Silchar too, both the associations organised symbolic protest in the campus of the office of Deputy Commissioner, Cachar. All ACS and ALRS officers were seen to take part actively in the protest movement with placards in their hands which read “Dismiss Pranjit Lahkar,” “We stand with Bibash Medi” etc. This Pranjit Lahkar happens to be the cop whohave allegedly physically assaulted ACS Officer Bibhas Medhi in Guwahati. Led by DDC Rajib Roy, ADC P.Jidung, Kishan Chorei, Abhinash Paul, Nabanita Hazarika, Himashri Deka among others were present there.
Later on expressing his views, senior bureaucrat, DDC Rajib Roy said, “Today we are doing symbolic protest as against the physical assault of one of colleagues by an on duty police officer in Guwahati. We have also given a memorandum in this connection to the Chief Secretary of the state wherein we have stated that without any delay, proper investigation should be done and appropriate measures be taken against this erring police officer.”
DDC Roy further added that the protest demonstration was going on all the district headquarters and sub-divisions in Assam in order to provide justice to their colleague and to send a clear message that such type of incidents are not repeated in the future.
