Omicron variant of Covid-19 found in 2 persons from Assam: Keshab Mahanta
Jan. 5: After Manipur and Meghalaya, Omicron variant of Covid-19 was detected in Assam also. Two persons from Assam were reported to be infected with Omicron variant. This was confirmed by state Health Minister, Keshab Mahanta. He informed that out of these two cases, one was detected as infected with Omicron in Shillong. The person aged 13 years lives with his parents in a rented house at Sonapur. The family is said to be living in Mumbai for a long time and had recently come back. They had visited Shillong and after they were put through tests, the boy turned out to be positive for the Omicron variant. After detection of the virus, they were residing in a rented house at Moirakusi in Sonapur.
Meanwhile, the second case was detected in Hojai and the infected person has been identified as Mohd. Mahmud Hussain (35 years), who recently had come back from Saudi Arabia. He is currently under the monitoring of the health department.
The two infected with the Omicron variant have been identified as Rohan Das, a resident of Sonapur, who was detected in #Shillong, #Meghalaya, and Mohammad Mahmud Hussain, a resident of Hojai, who travelled from Saudi Arabia was detected in our state. 2/2

Elaborating further during a press briefing, the state health minister Keshab Mahanta informed that from 1 January to 4 January, a total of 3,198 persons from abroad came to Assam. As per the last SOP, all of them were kept in isolation. Out of the 3,198 international travelers, 52 were found Covid positive in Rt-PCR test. These 52 samples were further sent to a lab to determine the presence of Omicron Variant. Out of the 52 RT-PCR positive cases, only 01 person (Ahmed Hussain-35 years) was found Omicron positive. His report was sent to Assam on Wednesday morning.
