NRC: Online correction of spelling errors to begin shortly
November 16: The final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam was published on July 30, 2018 which contained names of 2,89,83,677 people. However, since then people have discovered numerous spelling errors in their names. Meanwhile, the NRC authority has started distribution of forms from the Seva Kendras for correcting names that have appeared in the complete draft NRC with errors in spelling.
However, such corrections can also be done online within a few days as the NRC authority is going to make such a provision available in its portal – www.nrcassam.nic.in. NRC authority has developed a Unicode programming for those who want to get errors in their names corrected online. This provision is meant for those who want to get their names typed in Assamese and Bengali scripts. The online provision is still not available but as per sources, this provision will be made available very shortly. As per sources, the NRC authority is laying more stress on online correction of errors in names so as to ensure the final NRC free from spelling mistakes.
Meanwhile, those who want to get errors in their names corrected offline have to take forms from their respective NRC Seva Kendras, fill them up and submit them back to the Seva Kendras. The NRC authority has not announced the last date for correction of names. It has been learnt that the authority is going to give details of the name-correction phase through advertisements in the media later.
As per the verdict of the Supreme Court, the process of filing applications for claims and objections will continue till December 15, 2018. From February 1, 2019 the verification of claims and objection will start through hearings. It needs mention here that the final draft of NRC was released on 30 July, with names of 40, 07,707 persons excluded from the list.
