New organisation ‘Barak Students’ Union’ formed in Silchar
Aug. 8: A new students’ non-political organisation “Barak Students’ Union” came into existence in Silchar on Sunday. In a press meet organised by the newly formed union on Sunday, the members expressed the view that this valley inspite of its huge potential has never got its due share or recognition. It is therefore their foremost objective to see their valley prosper in its truest stride.
“We are a collective group of students from Barak Valley, residing both in the valley and outside. In the past, we have been raising issues concerning the development of this valley. This pandemic has given us much time to introspect and we now believe that it is time for us to channelize our efforts under a single banner for quick and more desired results. It is with this objective that this new organisation ‘Barak Students’ Union’ was formed,” said Neelam Nandy, Convenor of the organisation.
Addressing the media, Dilu Das, President of ‘Barak Students’ Union’ said, “The students of today will be the torch bearers of society tomorrow and hence, it seems most appropriate for students to actively participate in issues relating to their homeland. We welcome suggestions from all residents of the valley for future course of actions necessary for the development of Barak Valley.”
“As our first initiative, we decided to start a petition requesting the Government of India and the Government of Assam to sanction land at Lailapur and thereby enable the construction of a memorial for the brave martyrs who lost their lives on 26 July, 2021 at the Assam-Mizoram border while protecting the constitutional territory of the state,” stated Jyotish Dutta, Secretary of ‘Barak Students’ Union’.
