National Space Day Celebration in Assam University tomorrow

way2barak, August 22: The Government of India last year declared August 23 as ‘National Space Day’ to commemorate the historic achievement of the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3. The day will be celebrated on August 23 (Friday) organized by the Department of Physics, Assam University. Professor Biman Nath of Bangalore’s Raman Research Institute will attend the event as the chief guest and deliver a talk. The program will start at 10:30 am in the Meghnad Saha conference room of the department. Assam University Vice-Chancellor Professor Rajive Mohan Panth will officiate the welcome ceremony.

On the agenda is the unveiling of the department’s ‘Science Museum’, a short movie screening on the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3, science model and quiz competitions for school students, and debate competitions for college students. The debate topic will be “Should India prioritize space research over social and economic development?” The assistant professor of the English department, Dr. Anindya Sen, will be the speaker in the debate competition.

Besides, students and researchers of the physics department will participate in a poster exhibition. Around a hundred students from ten schools and seven colleges of Barak Valley have already registered for the event. Dr. Mahananda Baro is the coordinator of this event. It has been decided by the organizers that some of the special models from the Science Model Competition will be preserved in the museum of the department. The Head of Department of Physics, Professor Himadri Sekhar Das, announced the event in a press release.
