Nagaon BJP MP & Union Minister Rajen Gohain not to contest Lok Sabha polls
March 16: Rajen Gohain, Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) MP from Nagaon constituency and Union minister of state for railways announced on Saturday that he will not be contesting the ensuing Lok Sabha Elections. This was another blow for the State BJP leadership as its Tezpur MP RP Sharma resigned from the party.
Interacting with media in New Delhi, Gohain was of the view that as there are allegations and charges against him, he will not contest the election until and unless he is acquitted in all the charges. A case was filed under sections 417 (punishment for cheating), 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the minister at the Nagaon Sadar police station for allegedly raping and threatening a 24-year-old married woman in Deurigaon area of Nagaon district.
Meanwhile, sources revealed that Rajen Gohain, by virtue of being close to central BJP leadership was successful in managing to enlist his wife Rita Gohain in the expected candidates’ list for the Lok Sabha elections.
