Mission Angikar, an effort to stop child marriage started in Cachar
March 13: Child Marriage is a burning problem in the district of Cachar as 16.9% of girls get married before the age of 18 (NFHS4 Survey). With a view to tackle with the situation, Mission Angikar, an effort to stop child marriage was started in Cachar.
In a meeting, presided over by Jesica Lalsim, in-charge Deputy Commissioner, Cachar, the plan of action in this connection was discussed on Friday. The meeting was attended by Dr. S.J. Das, Jt. Director of Health Services, Sri. Ajit Kr. Bhattacharjee, SDM & HO, A.J. Barua, DSP (HQ), R.K. Kedia, District Social Welfare Officer, Rahul Ghose, DPM Secretary; TAI, Secretary, ITA and various other officials were present.
Suman Choudhury, District Media Expert, NHM made a detailed power-point presentation on the provisions of law as regards child marriage which includes imprisonment up to 1 month and fine of Rs.1000 or both. As part of Mission Angikar, intensive awareness campaign will be launched in various tea garden areas of the district.
Awareness activities are also to be undertaken in schools against child marriage. Parents are to be sensitized during Parent-Teachers Meet. Women Groups such as SHGs may be involved for creating support group to protect girls from Child Marriage. Jesica Lalsim, in-charge Deputy Commissioner in her speech urged upon the police administration to be proactive in case any child marriage is reported.
