  • 8 March, 1618: Johannes Kepler discovers the third Law of Planetary Motion.

  • 8 March, 1884: Susan B. Anthony addresses U.S. House Judiciary Committee arguing for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution granting women the right to vote, 16 years after legislators 1st introduced a federal women’s suffrage amendment.
  • 8 March, 1917: Russian “February Revolution” begins in earnest with protests celebrating International Woman’s Day and riots in St Petersburg over food rations and conduct of the war.
  • 8 March, 1921: Birth Anniversary of Sahir Ludhiyanvi, a famous film lyricist from India. His real name was Abdul Hayee and he wrote in both Hindi and Urdu. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1971 for his contribution towards Indian cinema.
  • 8 March, 1942: Japanese forces capture Rangoon, Burma during the World War II.
  • 8 March, 1953: Vasundhara Raje, a two-time BJP chief minister of Rajasthan and member of the Scindia royal family, was born on this day.
  • 8 March, 1957: Death anniversary of Shri Balasaheb Gangadhar Kher, the first chief minister of Bombay State which consisted of present-day states of Maharashtra & Gujarat of India. He was awarded Padma Vibhushan for his contributions.
  • 8 March, 1975: International Women’s Day is celebrated on the 8th of March every year. It is a focal point in the movement for women’s rights. After the Socialist Party of America organized a Women’s Day in New York City on February 28, 1909, German delegates Clara Zetkin, Käte Duncker and others proposed at the 1910 International Socialist Woman’s Conference that “a special Women’s Day” be organized annually. After women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917, March 8 became a national holiday there. The day was then predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until it was adopted by the feminist movement in about 1967. The United Nations began celebrating the day in 1975.
