Press Club: Debasish ranks highest in popularity, followed by Uttam Shee, Dilu & Ratnadeep

December 22: After a wait of 19 long years, the election of Silchar Press Club took place on Saturday. A 21-member committee was elected for a term of 3 years. Apart from the nine office bearers, another twelve members were also elected to the executive committee of the prestigious Silchar Press Club. Out of a total of 158 voters, 151 of them exercised their franchise. The highest number of votes were secured by Bijoy Krishna Nath, who won the post of President by defeating Fosi Uddin Khan by a huge margin of 96 votes.  Bijoy Krishna Nath got 120 votes as against 24 votes secured by Fosi Uddin Khan.

  • Joint Secretary: (Sports & Culture): As there was tie between Paplu Das and Santosh Chanda, so it was unanimously resolved that Paplu Das will be in this post for 1st one and & half years and Santosh Chanda will hold this post for last one and & half years.
  • Treasurer: Chinmoy Nath.

For the post of executive committee members, a total of 24 journalists contested for 12 posts of executive committee members. It was indeed a test of popularity. Though all the posts are of the same rank, yet the contestants were in tensed mood while the votes were counted. Debasish Purkayastha got 110 votes and topped the list. Debasish was followed by Uttam Shee who got 105 votes.

In terms of votes share, Dilu Das and Ratnadeep Deb got the third position by securing 100 votes each. The only female candidate in the entire committee, Sonali Nath secured the 5th position and got 97 votes. Another enthusiastic journalist Biswa Kalyan Purkayastha (Tilak) secured 92 votes and was in the 7th position. Four persons, Jyotirmoy Kanti Das, Anirbanjyoti Gupta, Bappi Acharjee and Joydeb Sinha each got 78 votes and were elected as executive members. The last two positions were bagged by Shibasish Bhattacharjee who got 76 votes and Shubro Kanti Bhattacharjee who got 75 votes.

  10. Joydeb Sinha: 78 votes
  11. Shibasish Bhattacharjee: 76 votes
  12. Subhro Kanti Bhattacharjee: 75 votes

The 21-member committee of Silchar Press Club will take oath very soon and start its functioning.
