Manipur govt suspended internet services in 9 districts for another 15 days
way2barak, Jan 2 : Considering the prevailing law and order situation arises in view of the recent violent incidents, the Manipur government on Tuesday has extended the suspension of the mobile internet services for another 15 days in the stretch of two km radius in between nine districts.
Since Saturday, 10 Manipur police commandos and a Border security Force (BSF) trooper have been injured in different incidents of attacks by suspected Kuki militants at Moreh in Tengnoupal district.and on the first day of the New Year on Monday four people were killed and 14 others injured by armed attackers in Thoubal district.
Manipur Commissioner, Home, T. Ranjit Singh, in a notification said that in view of the prevailing law and order situation, the state government, after reviewing the situation and its possible correlation with the general operation of internet suspension in the last fortnight, decided to continue suspension of operation of the mobile towers provided internet services in the stretch of two km radius along adjoining areas between nine districts for another 15 days.
The nine districts include, Chandel, Kakching, Churachandpur, Bisnupur, Kangpokpi, Imphal West, Thoubal, Tengnoupal, Imphal East.
The Manipur government, after seven months, on December 3 last year lifted the ban on mobile internet services in large parts of violence-hit state.
However, the ban continued in border areas of nine districts, officials said.
Mobile internet was first banned in Manipur around eight month ago after the ethnic violence between non-tribal Meitei and tribal Kuki-Zo communities broke out on May 3.
Since then, the ban has been extended after every five days.
