Feb. 9: The members of Leo Club of Silchar Central distributed old clothes among the destitute at Kalakhal near Assam- Mizoram border on Sunday. The enthusiastic youths of the club visited the Reang Punji near the Mizoram border and donated the clothes among 150 beneficiaries.

The Reang (Bru), who are spread across Mizoram, Tripura and other parts of Southern Assam are said to be the most disadvantaged tribe. They are essentially ethnically different from the Mizos. Reangs have their own distinct language and dialect.

Leo Ananya Pandit said, “We started our journey from Lions Enclave, Silchar and covered 60 kms to reach our destination. After keen observation, we noted that the entire area is lacking behind with no electricity (solar panels installed). They have to travel 20 kms everyday for buying their basic daily needs. There is no medical facility and absence of proper water supply, shabby houses with no toilets/ sanitation facility.”

A total of 6 Leo members were present during the cloth distribution ceremony. They are Leo Bhaswati Bhattacharjee, Appayan Modak, Kshounish Mazumder, Ananya Pandit, Mishmita Nath Samjhpati and Rajdulali Mazumder.
