Karimganj police seize drugs worth ₹18 cr, 4 nabbed including 1 injured in encounter

April 8: Assam Police has achieved another major breakthrough in its drive against drugs. In a day-long operation, Karimganj Police seized 2.275 kg of Heroin packed in 175 soap cases, hidden in a compartment of a Tata Sumo coming from a neighbouring state. The heroin seized is worth Rs.18 crore in the international market.

Four accused were apprehended by the police. Out of the four, one drugs peddler, Jakir Hussain suddenly started to vomit. When policemen present there went to fetch water for him, Jakir tried to elope. Police had to fire in his left leg to prohibit him from escaping from the spot. At present, he is undergoing treatment at Hailakandi Civil Hospital.

The drive against drugs continued for more than 18 hours on Friday. The drive was led by forces from Karimganj and Ramkrishna Nagar under the leadership of ASP Partha Pratim Das. Members from the Narcotics branch were also involved in the drive. The drugs were recovered from a Sumo vehicle. Superintendent of Police, Padmanabha Barua was coordinating the drive from early morning. Later on, addressing the media at Friday late night, the SP said, “We have been keeping a sharp eye upon the activities of drugs mafia Hussain Ahmed Khan since quite some time. Finally, we achieved success on Friday.”

During the day, police first apprehended 2 drug peddlers, Said Ahmed of Ratabari and Jakir Hussain of Patharkandi. They entered Assam from Mizoram in a Sumo vehicle. On searching, the police recovered two cases of brown sugar from the vehicle. When these two accused were interrogated, they revealed that more drugs were to arrive in another Sumo vehicle. They also revealed that the owner of the vehicle was one Hussain Ahmed Khan. Though the driver escaped, but police nabbed one peddler Nurul Islam from the vehicle along with huge quantity of drugs.
