It’s a gross volition of human rights, says Jairam Ramesh after visiting Detention Camp at Silchar

November 7: “Around 48 detainees have claimed themselves as bonafide Indians. Further, 17 of them have confessed of coming from Bangladesh & are willing to return back to their own country. Six of them are from Myanmar. There are many detainees, who have spent more than three years in this detention centre, and as per law, with a surety of Rs 2 lakh they can get bail,” said Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh after visiting the detention camp within Silchar Central Jail.

On Thursday, a delegation of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) visited the Detention Centre of Silchar located within the Silchar Central Jail. The delegation was led by Rajya Sabha MP & Congress leader Jairam Ramesh. He was accompanied by former minister Mukul Wasnik, Jitendra Singh, President APCC Ripun Bora, All India Mahila Congress President Sushmita Dev, Sanjeev Roy among others.

Jairam Ramesh is on a week-long tour to Northeast to learn about the opinions of people and party leaders on the NRC and Citizenship Amendment Bill. On Thursday, he along with his team mates spent around half an hour at the Silchar detention camp and interacted with the detainees therein. He has expressed his serious concern over ‘gross violation of human rights’ in the Silchar detention centre.

Jairam Ramesh made special mention of a lady from Karimganj who is lodged in the detention centre along with her daughter for 10 years. He said, “This is very inhuman and against the law of the land. I would definitely talk with our party leaders and ask them to offer her legal aid so that she can come out of the camp. Disobedience to the law of the land is a big blot on the face of civilised society.” On the basis of the experience gathered at the Detention Centre, the Congress delegation would submit a report to the party President Sonia Gandhi.

Commenting on the overall political scenario, Jairam Ramesh said, “We do the work of unifying people but BJP does divisive politics. We spread the message of brotherhood but Narendra Modi and Amit Shah spreads venom in the country. We have come here at the direction of our party President. We will have a comprehensive talk about NRC and Citizenship Amendment Bill.”
