High voltage campaigning for 2nd phase of election ends
April 16: The high voltage election campaign by the political parties ahead of the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections scheduled on 18 April 2019 came to an end at 5 PM on 16 April. A total of 97 constituencies across 13 states of the country including Assam (5), Tripura (1), Manipur (1) will go for polls in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections on 18 April.
The 5 constituencies of Assam which will go for poll during the second phase includes Silchar, Karimganj, Autonomous District, Mangaldoi & Nowgong. A total of 69,10,592 electors including 33,55,952 women and 180 belonging to third gender are scheduled to cast their votes in 8,992 polling stations in these five Lok Sabha constituencies. There are a total of 50 candidates including 18 Independent candidates in the fray for the five Lok Sabha constituencies that are going to polls on April 18.
At Silchar, sitting MP Sushmita Dev is contesting as a Congress candidate as against the BJP candidate Dr. Rajdeep Roy. Both of them has inherited a career in politics as a family legacy. Sushmita Dev is the daughter of the former Union Minister of Congress Santosh Mohan Dev, whereas, Dr. Rajdeep Roy is the son of former BJP MLA from Silchar, Late Bimalangshu Roy. A total of 13 candidates are contesting for the prestigious Silchar seat, but in fact the main battle of ballot will be between the Congress and BJP. Here, a total of 11.9 Lakh voters will decide the fate of the 13 candidates.
At Karimganj, Ratabari MLA Kripanath Malla is the BJP candidate. Sitting MP Radheshyam Biswas will contest for the second time from AIUDF, whereas Congress has fielded Swarup Das from Karimganj Lok Sabha constituency. A total of 14 candidates are contesting for for the Karimganj seat, the fight for which is expected to be triangular. At Karimganj, 13.3 lakh voters will decide the fate of these 14 candidates.
