July 27: When the government first banned the 59 apps, there were speculations that PUBG will also be banned, but it wasn’t. PUBG has its largest user base in India with around 175 million downloads. However, now the the government may ban PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) in India. PUBG has been subject to heavy criticism several times in the past due to its addictive nature that has a psychological impact on players, especially youngsters.

The speculation of banning PUBG became more ripe when Indian Government on 27 July banned 47 more Chinese apps that were clones of the earlier banned apps. Some of these include TikTok Lite, Helo Lite, ShareIt Lite, Bigo Lite and VFY Lite, all of which are reportedly unavailable on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. While PUBG is not a part of the list, it is said to be under the scanner.

Earlier, in June, Indian government banned 59 Chinese apps, including popular ones like TikTok, UC Browser, citing data security concerns. As per a report by India Today on Monday, the “Indian government announced that they will scrutinise more than 200 apps for national security and user privacy violations, and in case any breach is found, they will most likely ban these apps.” It further stated that the list of 200 apps under the scanner of the government also includes the gaming app PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds alias PUBG.
