Flouting Covid protocols may invite another lockdown in Assam: Chief Secretary

August 28: Is Assam moving ahead towards another round of total lockdown? If the Assam, state Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna’s statement is taken into account, then the answer may be a big ‘Yes.’ On Friday, the State Chief Secretary said, although the death rate in Assam is less in comparison to the other Indian states, yet the number of COVID-19 cases are increasing in the state at an alarming rate.


He expressed anguish at the fact that the people in the state are exhibiting a careless attitude when it comes to obeying of COVID-19 protocols. Flouting the COVID-19 norms by people at large has become the order of the day. He expressed great concern as the number of deaths in the state is rising rapidly. He categorically stated that the way in which a section of the populace are coming out without masks and also disobeying social distancing norms, this could further worsen the situation. The Chief Secretary expressed this apprehension at the sidelines of an event in Guwahati on Friday.

In a strict note, the Chief Secretary said, if the people of the state continues to lead their lives by blatantly ignoring all safety protocols, then the Government of Assam might be compelled to impose yet another lockdown. Though he was not in favour of anymore lockdown, but he indicated that the situation might compel him to take a drastic step for the common good.

A total of 2560 persons tested positive in Assam on Friday, thereby taking the state tally to 1,01,367. As of now, there are 21,771 active cases in the state. Moreover, during the day, 08 persons died due to COVID-19 in Assam, thereby taking the death tally to 286.
