Deadlock continues in Assam University, students opinion divided
বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে অচলাবস্থা অব্যাহত, ছাত্রসমাজে বিভাজন

১৭ ফেব্রুয়ারি: না, অষ্টমদিনেও আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অচলাবস্থার অবসান হয়নি৷ দুদিন ধরে দফায় দফায় বৈঠক হলেও গেট আটকে আন্দোলন অব্যাহত রয়েছে৷ এর জেরে সমাবর্তন স্থগিত রাখার সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছে কর্তৃপক্ষ৷ আগামী ১ মার্চ সমাবর্তনের কথা ছিল৷ নতুন তারিখ চূড়ান্ত হয়নি৷ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় সূত্রে জানা গিয়েছে, মঙ্গলবার সমাবর্তন সংক্রান্ত বিভিন্ন দরপত্র খোলার তারিখ ছিল৷ সংশ্লিষ্ট সবাইকে জানিয়ে দেওয়া হয়েছে, তা এখনই খোলা হচ্ছে না৷

রবিবার দ্বিপাক্ষিক বৈঠকে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় কর্তৃপক্ষ জানিয়ে দেয়, মিলন দাস ভবিষ্যতে এমনটা করবেন না বলে মুচলেকা দিলেই তাকে বহিষ্কারের নির্দেশ প্রত্যাহারের দাবি ভেবে দেখা যেতে পারে৷ কিন্তু আন্দোলনকারী ছাত্ররা এই শর্ত মানতে রাজি হয়নি৷ তাদের আর্জি, নিঃশর্তভাবে ওই নির্দেশ ফিরিয়ে নিতে হবে৷ সোমবার বৈঠক হয় তিনপক্ষে৷ জেলা প্রশাসনের আহ্বানে বৈঠকে বসে ছাত্র সংসদ এবং বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় কর্তৃপক্ষ৷

রবিবার উপাচার্য দিলীপচন্দ্র নাথ আলোচনায় উপস্থিত থাকলেও সোমবার যাননি৷ এ দিনের বৈঠকে জেলাশাসক বর্ণালী শর্মা ধৈর্য সহ উভয় পক্ষের বক্তব্য শোনেন৷ ছাত্ররা মিলন দাসের মুচলেকা দেওয়ার কথা মেনে নিতে পারে না৷ তারা নিজেরা লিখিত দিতে পারে বলে জানায়৷ কর্তৃপক্ষের স্পষ্ট কথা, যাকে বহিষ্কার করা হয়েছে, তাকেই মুচলেকা দিতে হবে৷ ফলে সিদ্ধান্ত ছাড়াই সভা সম্পন্ন হয়৷

পরে উপাচার্য দিলীপচন্দ্র নাথ ওয়েটুবরাক-কে জানান, মিলন ভবিষ্যতে আর এমন করবে না বলে লিখে দিলে আমরা একটা কমিটি গড়ে বিষয়টি তাদের কাছে পাঠানো হতো৷ হয়তো দুই বছরের জায়গায় এক বছরের জন্য বহিষ্কার করা হতো৷ বা এমনও হতে পারত, মিলন দাস শুধু মূল রাস্তা ধরে নিজের বিভাগে যাওয়া-আসা করবে৷ অন্যত্র কোথাও যাবে না৷ এমন শর্তে পূর্বের নির্দেশটাই হয়তো উঠৈ যেত৷ মুচলেকা না দিয়ে, আন্দোলন চালিয়ে যাওয়ায় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়কে অন্যপথই নিতে হবে বলে সতর্ক করেন উপাচার্য৷

কী সেই অন্য পথ? দিলীপবাবু জানান, এগজিকিউটিভ কাউন্সিলের জরুরি বৈঠক মিলন দাসের বহিষ্কারের নির্দেশে অনুমোদন জানিয়েছে৷ সিদ্ধান্ত হয়েছে, ধরণা-প্রতিবাদ-আন্দোলন ইত্যাদির জন্য বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে একটি জায়গা নির্দিষ্ট করে দেওয়া হবে৷ অন্যত্র সব ধরনের আন্দোলন নিষিদ্ধ৷ মঙ্গলবারই আন্দোলনকারীদের নির্দিষ্ট জায়গায় চলে যেতে বলা হবে৷ না মানলে প্রশাসন ব্যবস্থা নেবে৷

এদিকে, ছাত্রসমাজে সোমবার বিভাজন ধরেছে৷  একদল ছাত্র উপাচার্যকে চিঠি লিখে ক্লাশ শুরুর অনুরোধ জানিয়েছে৷

February 17: Clouds of uncertainty still seems to loom large in Assam University, Silchar. Meanwhile, the agitation by students of Assam University in Silchar has entered its eighth day on Monday. There appears to be no silver lining as of present. The hunger strike by the students has entered the sixth day.

The varsity has also decided to postpone the forthcoming convocation supposed to be held on 1 March, 2020 in the backdrop of the ongoing students’ agitation. Sources in the university revealed that on Tuesday, tenders were to be opened in connection with the convocation. However, all concerned were informed by the university authority that the process of opening the tenders will be withheld as of now.

On Sunday, the university authority during meeting with the students made it clear that if Milon Das makes a written appeal of not committing any similar act in the future, then they may rethink the matter of revoking the order of his rustication. The agitating students refused to oblige by this decision of the varsity. They made it clear that the university will have to revoke this order unconditionally.

On Monday, a tripartite meeting took place among the District administration, agitating students and University authorities in the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Cachar. However, the Vice Chancellor of Assam University was not present in this meeting.

Deputy Commissioner, Barnali Sarma listened to the views of both the students and the university authority with apt attention. The students categorically stated that the matter of giving undertaking by Milon Das is unacceptable to them. They rather said that, if required, they can give any writing. But on the flip side, the university authorities were strict in their point that the student who was issued the order of rustication shall have to give an undertaking by himself. Due to difference of opinion, the meeting ended without any concrete decision.

Later on, speaking to way2barak, Vice Chancellor of Assam University, Prof. Dilip Chandra Nath said, “If Milon Das gives in writing that he will not do such activities in the future, then we can constitute a committee and sent his prayer to them. It may be such that the committee would have reviewed the decision and suspend him for one year only instead of two. This may also be possible that the committee could decide that Milon Das be allowed to continue his study and he be allowed this on condition that he goes straight to his department and not go elsewhere in the campus.”

The Vice Chancellor also warned that the university will now have to think of other ways as the students have not agreed to the suggestions of the university. Explaining the future course of action, Prof. D.C. Nath informed that the Executive Council of the University in its emergent meeting ratified the decision of rustication of Milon Das. It was also decided that for any kind of dharna/agitation or demonstration by students, a particular spot will be earmarked by the authority. On Tuesday, the agitating students will be asked to move to that particular spot. He clarified that, if the students disobey, then the administration will take strict action against them.

Meanwhile, this issue has created a sharp division among the students of Assam University. A memorandum for restoration of academic activities in Assam University was addressed to the Vice Chancellor of the varsity on 17 February, 2020, which was signed by 539 students. On the flip side, some students have alleged in social media that many signatures in the said memorandum were forged. With opinion getting divided among the student community, it becomes very difficult to ascertain how long this stalemate will continue.
