DDMA, AAPDA Mitra volunteers create awareness on flood safety measures in Hailakandi district
June 11: With cases of drowning following the rise in water level of rivers due to incessant rainfall in South Assam’s Hailakandi district, the District Disaster Management Authority has been on an intensive awareness drive in flood prone areas across the district. District Project Officer, field officers and other functionaries are visiting flood and landline prone areas such as Ratanpur and Mohonpur to create awareness on safety measures.
District Project Officer, DDMA, Rupjoy Maibangsa said that DDMA personnel and AAPDA Mitra volunteers have urged the people to follow the flood advisory and to take care of their children during floods. “Most deaths take place due to drowning while crossing flooded rivers or streams or while taking baths in flooded ponds or water bodies, or due to electrocution,” said Maibangsa, adding that safety measures have to be strictly adhered to during the floods to avoid mishaps.
Maibangsa said only trained personnel may rescue a person from drowning or else one can contact the district emergency operation centre toll free number 1077 for help.
Flood advisory leaflets were distributed among the people urging them not to swim flooded rivers or streams or on any flowing water body and not to touch or go near any submerged transformers, electrical posts or wires. The DDMA personnel along with AAPDA Mitra volunteers also appealed to the people to observe social distancing, to wear masks and to maintain personal hygiene to contain the novel coronavirus.
